Week Six – Men’s Football Fashion By Scott Castleman

For American men there is nothing more beautiful and
reinvigorating to the spirit than an asphalt parking lot, a cooler filled to
the brim with adult beverages and a hot grill overlooking their favorite football
stadium. Wives grumble as husbands who usually need a GPS to find a local
grocery store suddenly gain their bearings and make multiple market trips for
the four food groups of tailgating: beer, meat, chips and beer (Yes I know beer
is included in the list twice… you need enough brews to celebrate the win too).
Chances are many of us over the age of 25 also spend more
time picking out our game day attire than we did the outfit for our first date.
No offense to my friends in SEC country, but this doesn’t necessarily mean
creased slacks, penny loafers and a blazer.
There are many different styles that can make you stand out from the
crowd and range from casual to preppy. Below I’ve put together a playbook of
some of my favorites:
Shoes: On the preppy side, you can’t go wrong
with the classic look of Sperrys.
Their special edition line is loaded
with color combinations, so chances are you can find something to that flows with
your alma mater.  I also like Sebago boots once things
get nippy. If you prefer a sportier look, you can never go wrong with a throwback
Nike Air Max pair, or a set of New Balance.
Pants/Shorts: It’s never, ever acceptable to
wear jorts (cargo shorts are a close second). Now that I have that off my chest
let me introduce you to Pennington
& Bailes
. This company started making the college logo pants and has experienced
meteoric growth in the past five years, now carrying everything from driving
mocs to neckties. When it comes to denim I’ll leave that up to you (there are
tons of great lines and you know what fits best for you). However, if you
choose skinny jeans I reserve the right to unmercifully chastise you. Friends
don’t let friends wear skinny jeans.
Shirts: Let me introduce you to your new
favorite polo and dress shirt company: Southern
Tide
. My wife would probably tell you I have an unhealthy obsession with
them, but Southern Tide is the new industry standard  in this category. Over the
last four years or so I’ve replaced all of my Ralph Lauren, Vineyard Vines,
Banana Republic and other shirts because of ST’s superior look, feel and fit. Make
sure to check out their collegiate line
for your team licensed shirts. If you prefer t-shirts, particularly with a
vintage look, visit Homage. Their shirts
are witty, comfortable and endorsed by the top Sportsanista herself for this design
–     Sunglasses: This is another category where I’ll
only recommend
one company and that is Maui
Jim
. They have tons of great
options,
but I prefer the weightless feel of the Banyans.
–     Outerwear: You never know what elements you will
find yourself
sitting in so make sure you’re prepared for the worst. My
favorite jacket
      is made by Helly Hansen
because it’s lightweight and watertight. It
also has enough room to wear a
couple layers underneath to beat
      the autumn chill.
So there you have it from the fashion mecca of the world
(Charleston, West Virginia). Best of luck to your alma mater this fall… unless
they’re playing the Mountaineers! You may not win every game, but you should never lose a
tailgate.
