Rwanda Photo Diary – Part I

Morning all! Today I’m, FINALLY, sharing some photos from our trip to Africa this past summer. First up, Rwanda! The first night in Rwanda we stayed in the beautiful and vibrant city of Kigali. The following day we traveled three hours up mountain to 8,000 ft above sea level – let me tell you something, that is no joke! We stayed three nights at the amazing Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge – it was a beautiful lodge where I had some of my best meals to date! If only someone was still bringing me tea and biscuits with my wake-up call….

IMG_1907You’ll see some more fantastic photos from our incredible excursion into the Volcan National Park where we spent time with a few mountain gorilla families. The first hike was straight out of a movie. Here is the brief version….

  • We drove two hours from the park center to the actual hike entrance
  • You travel with porters and a few guides – some of which or cutting the trail as you go! Yes they are carrying machetes!
  • Oh did I mention the guy with an AK 47? Yup, he was there too.
  • We hiked through dense bamboo and what seemed like miles of stinging nettles
  • After three hours of hiking to 11,000 ft above sea level, just when we all wanted to give up, the most incredible moment happened. We were face to face with mountain gorillas! It was such a beautiful moment and experience to be with them in their natural habitat!
  • After an hour with the family we traveled downward.
  • I took a HUGE fall and brought my porter down with me. He repaid me by crop dusting in my face the entire way down the mountain. I deserved it.
  • When we hit level ground, which I never thought we would, my legs felt so weak I thought they were going to break!
  • We were in bed by 7pm and up at 5am to do it all over again. 🙂

  1. Looks like such a fun time and the experience of a lifetime. I’m a little scared of going to certain countries because you need to get shots and I hate shots. I barely can get my blood drawn (seriously) so the anxiety of additional vaccination makes the travel not as appealing but I really need to get over it because your photography of Rwanda is amazing! xx, adaatude.com
