Mother Knows Best by Megan Riggs
Ladies and gentlemen, chipmunks and squirells, it is with great pleasure that I introduce to you Ms. Laura Lesko Lewis. Who is LLL you ask? Ms. Lewis is a confidant, mother, wife, Jayhawk and of course, Sportsanista. This week she is enlightening all you moms, aunts, babysitters, and good friends out there with her game day game plan. With many (a lady never discloses her age) years of collegiate athletic experience, a few years of being a fantastic mom, and a lifetime of being a fan, this gal knows what she is talking about. Without further adieu, I give you Mother Knows Best.
Game day can be a long day… and even longer with a nap-deprived two-year-old on a 90-degree humid Midwest afternoon. Parking can be miles away and you may be packed into a stadium with 50,000 rowdy fans, but with preparation (for at least an eight-hour day) and a little bit of patiences, gameday with your toddler can be bearable (and you can still look good doing it).
Tailgate Prep
For a tailgate bag use something festive and eco-friendly yet collapsible for easy stowing post-tailgate koozies for the group, and for a first tailgate of the season treat! Peanut butter stuffed pretzels are a must; a plastic container means treats won’t get smashed from car to tent! Mommy drink of choice…Bota box of wine (not shown below); other mommy drink of choice, in this case it was beergarita. My go to bag is the Kate Spade “mama” bag. Backpacks are for students, and they are not allowed in Memorial Stadium. Get a nice mom bag, ladies!

That is all you ask? On a tricky weather day, this list will include hats, coats, gloves, etc…
And now for apparel…….
Flats are a must; cute boat shoes, sandals, riding or cowboy boots… all depend on weather but the tailgate spots tend to be hilly and the last thing you need is a tumble down. Jeans are also a must; this isn’t the south and Midwest weather is unpredictable……shorts in early fall are acceptable. Fan t-shirt, with bedazzle is a bonus; if you don’t wear your team colors, you will be the only one. Accessories should include fashionable shades, post earrings, fun jewelry, easy hair. Like I said, this is not the South.
