The Middle to the Mountains by Megan Riggs

Three days of packing, four tanks of gas, twelve hours of
driving and two trips to Target later, I found myself settled in the surreal
town of Aspen. Pinch me. I was anxious to dive head first into everything Kate
and found it nearly impossible to wait over a month for our doors to open. In
the blink of an eye five weeks had passed, corporate had landed, shipment was
delivered and it was time to get down to business.

The first few days were wonderful. We said hello to our friends
from New York City, got to know our new associates, taught the ways of Kate,
worked through our challenges, rang the gals’ first purchases and said goodbye
to the day with great anticipation for the next. Did the six steps of selling
just turn into the six steps of store opening? I think they did!
As we prepared to open our doors a day early, I was eager to
take on my new responsibilities as not only a fulltime associate, but a manager
as well. It is important to set the example no matter what your role is. With
that, I put a little extra pressure on myself as Abbey and I were the only two
that had previously been with the company. It is our responsibility to show the
staff what it is to be the brand and service the customer. They should be able
to learn from watching us interact with customers and from our coaching.
Likewise, it is important to keep an open mind and realize we can be learning
from our team as well.
Opening a new store is a unique and fulfilling journey. In a
playful way, it is like combining Candy Land and Pretty Pretty Princess. You
are faced with the challenge of crossing Candy Land Forest and Gum Drop
Mountain and take the risk of collecting the dreaded black ring, but in the end
you know you will end up living colorfully.
