Grownups Invest by Megan Riggs

I do not care for the word splurge.  It sounds wrong and wrong makes me feel guilty; fashion should never spark that emotion.  When it comes to purchasing outside my budget, I like to consider it an “investment”, which makes me feel responsible.

I remember my first investment like it was just yesterday.  Spring of 2009, the season I decided I could not live another day without an amazingly chic pair of Marc Jacobs sunglasses.  Thusly, I drove to Nordstrom and walked with purpose to the sunglass counter, with only a brief stop at the MAC counter and a quick pass though purses.  Almost instantaneously I spotted MY pair.  I went back at least once a week for three weeks to make sure Marc was still the apple of my eye.  I was on a first name basis with the salesperson and was not embarrassed about it; Christina was lovely.  After checking the forecast and noting we were about to have a week of California Spring perfection, I decided it was time to commit to my investment.  Upon my arrival, Christina went to the back and brought out an untouched pair of Marc’s.  This pair of sunglasses would only ever rest atop my nose……the best $178.60 I had ever spent.
There is no room for rookie errors when it comes to investing properly. For this Sportsanista, these items include: purses, some jewelry, sunglasses, winter coats and boots.  Confession…..I have used living in a place with real winters as justification for purchasing, pardon me, investing in more than one pair of great boots. I tend to veer away from overly trendy items as the return on investment just isn’t there me.  I always ask my potential investment three questions: How often will I wear you?  Can I wear you to work or an interview?  Will you make my life better and strangers envious? Three yeses, and the umpire calls safe!
The latest gem pinning for my affection: Marc by Marc Jacobs Henry watch in rose gold.  Marc is one man who will never disappoint me.

1) We are investing not splurging
2) Have standards, they are good in all areas of life, fashion included.
3) Visit the item. If you are just as giddy the fifth time as you were the first, you need to own it!
Happy investing.
