College Couture….on the field?
So this article is slightly off-top, however, I thought that the topic was interesting nonetheless. On last weeks College Game Day, show my two favorite worlds had a baby; College Game Day and the Fashion Police. Who says that trends and fashion statements are only for the runway? The new trends and fads we see on the field are ever changing as are those on the runway. Now I am not saying that this is to take away from the play on the field, but you have to admit, some of us get curious as to what the teams pairings may be that weekend; I sure am selective as to what my Mountaineers wear each weekend…….still trying to get used to the “gold rush” look!

Back to the show……as an Oregon Duck proceeds down the runway Michael Forde, Todd Radom and Gigi Gerrante discuss how Under Armor and Nike have designed “high end couture” for sports. The University of Oregon has over 10 uniform combinations to select from each Saturday. Sounds like me; I hate to wear the same thing twice, so why should our players? For myself, I know that if I feel good and look good, my performance that day will be stronger, and Ill be more confident in my efforts. Who is to say that these athletes don’t mimic those emotions as well?

With uniforms now being used as a recruiting tool or an influencer to the incoming athlete, is the cutting edge tampering with tradition? In 1977, Notre Dame played USC in what was known as the “Green Jersey” game. Coach Devine changed up the traditional blue uniforms to green jerseys in an effort to charge up the team for the largest rivalry in college football today. Notre Dame went on to win this match-up crushing USC’s goal of a spot at the National Title game. Remember, it’s not “keeping up with the Jones’s”, its being the Jones’s!! Remember this when getting ready for work tomorrow and have yourself a “Green Jersey” day.

Nike's gun metal gray Oregon uniforms with the lime green fluorescent numbers are by far my favorite this year. Under Armour's Maryland flag jerseys were an epic fail in my opinion.
The concept of a big time recruit picking a major University based on jerseys seems like ludacris concept, but sadly, we are still talking about 17 and 18 year old kids here.
The fact of the matter is, most schools can attempt to lure these kids in with brand endorsements and cool jersey designs because their football programs are not built on tradition and stand for nothing more than bright jersey colors.
Notre Dame is built on tradition, but can still spark things up (new helmets this past weekend). Various random jerseys are clearly not an option for a university like ND. Besides, I don't think the Indiana state flag would look very cool.
